How to grow

Sun to part shade. Purple milkweed prefers moist soil, but is surprisingly adaptable and can tolerate periodic drought and flooding.

Care and maintenance

Easy and carefree. Watering plants during extended dry spells will prevent plants from going dormant early.

Where to plant

In flower beds, meadows, butterfly gardens, and rain gardens.

When to Plant

Anytime through the growing season.

When planting in a group, space plants 2 to 4 ft. apart.

When will my plant flower?

Plants will likely flower the following year after planting.

Native habitat and range

Grows at the edges of swamp forests from New Hampshire south into North Carolina, where it’s rare.

Source and origin

Plants are grown from seed collected off plants at the nursery. Original source came from seeds collected from a population growing on the edge of a bottomland forest in Pender County, North Carolina.
