Carolina Jessamine, or Yellow Jasmine as it’s sometimes called, is a spectacular native vine that begins flowering with the arrival of warmer weather in early spring.
- Yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds
- Evergreen leaves
- Deer resistant
- Twining vine 10 to 20 ft. or more, if growing up a tree to reach light
- Vigorous growth habit, but generally well-behaved
- Flowers release a lovely fragrance similar to baby powder
- Hardy in USDA hardiness zones 7, 8, 9 and 10
In central North Carolina, flowering usually starts in early March and can continue for 3 to 4 weeks.
How to grow
Carolina Jessamine is very adaptable and can grow in many types of soil, including sand and clay. Once established, plants can tolerate extended drought and periodic flooding with ease.
Care and maintenance
Carefree if sited where it has space to mature. If necessary, vines can be cut back after flowering and they will bloom the following spring. Vines need to be trained or tied to a support until they start twining themselves around their climbing structure.
Where to plant
Along fences and up trellis’s to create an attractive living wall of green. They also look stunning when trained up arbors and along deck railings.
When to plant
In the South can be planted anytime that the ground is not frozen. For gardeners further north, we recommend planting in spring or early summer to get plants established before winter.
Carolina Jessamine is fast-growing, and one plant can cover 100 sq. ft. of space over a 3 to 5 year period. If planting along a fence, space plants 6 to 10 ft. apart.
When will my plant flower?
Plants shipped in February or March will be in bud or flower. Plants purchased after March will flower the following year.
Native habitat and range
At the edges of dry and wet woods. Native from Virginia and southeast Tennessee into northern Florida and east Texas.
Source and origin
Plants are grown from cuttings off a plant that was originally grown from seed collected in Pender County, NC.
