White Bracted Sedge or Star Grass is our most striking native sedge and stands out with its white petal-like bracts that glisten in the summer sun.

Details

  • 20 to 30 inches tall and around 3 feet wide in 3 years
  • Perennial sedge that spreads by underground rhizomes to form a dense mat
  • Plants die back to their roots in the fall and leaf out again in the spring
  • Often confused with Rhynchospora colorata which is a shorter and less showy plant
  • Hardy in USDA hardiness zones 7, 8, and 9

Flowering period

In central North Carolina, flowering starts in late May and can continue into fall if the dead flowers are removed.

How to Grow

Requires permanently wet soil and full sun to flourish.

Care and maintenance

The three secrets to successfully growing White Bracted Sedge are:

  1. Cut off or pull out old flowering stems to encourage new flowers
  2. Grow in a container and keep it in a saucer with 1 to 2 in. of water in the bottom
  3. Repot or divide plants every second year and fertilize to encourage new growth and development of flowers

Best planted in its own container sitting in a saucer of water for a constant supply of moisture.

Anytime through the growing season.

When will my plant flower?

Plants purchased and planted before July will bloom their first summer.

Native habitat and range

Wet pine savannas from southeastern North Carolina to Florida and southeast Texas.

Source and origin

Plants are grown by division off a plant that originated from Pender County, North Carolina.

Are your plants shipped in their containers?

Yes, all our plants are shipped in their growing containers. The dimensions of the containers are 4.5 inches wide by 5 inches deep or 32 fl. oz.

How long will it take to get my order?

All plants are shipped from our nursery in central North Carolina. When you select the "ship now" option, your order will be shipped within one week.

Can I get my plants shipped at a later date?

Yes, in the shopping cart select the week you would like your order to be shipped on.

What shipping carriers do you use?

USPS Priority Mail and UPS Ground for larger orders.

Do you guarantee your plants?

We guarantee our plants to be healthy, ready for planting, and correctly named. We are not able to guarantee whether a plant will grow in your garden as there are too many circumstances that are beyond our control.

On rare occasions, a plant shipped dormant may fail to emerge from its dormancy. If this happens, please let us know.

If you are concerned about a plant, please contact us within 14 days to let us know. If we can’t help you make it grow, we’ll send you a new plant or issue a refund.

Returns

Unfortunately, due to the perishable nature of plants, they can’t be returned for a refund. If your plants arrive damaged or you are unhappy with them, please let us know straight away.

What about sales tax?

We propagate our own plants and are not required to collect North Carolina sales tax.
